Bicycling and Shared Path Advisory Committee

Originally Established in 2006, the Salem Bicycling and Shared Path Advisory Committee is dedicated to advocating for the creation of an alternative safe, convenient, fun, and affordable way to travel. The Committee advises the City on its expansion of bicycle and pedestrian pathway infrastructure, programs, and policies that have a wide range of benefits to Salem and its neighborhoods:

A primary goal of the committee is to establish safe and convenient car-separated bicycle and pedestrian pathways for use by all.  This will:

  • Better-enable the use of alternative and non-engine-driven transportation which benefits the environment.
  • Allow safe pathways for those traveling to work or school.
  • Provide a safe and pleasant environment for outdoor exercise and recreation, including children, families and leisurely walkers.
  • Assist in traffic calming through neighborhoods by using bike lanes to help manage flow.
  • Connect with other pathways in neighboring communities.
  • Reduce automobile reliance and reduce traffic congestion and parking demand.
  • Support local economy by providing another means for customers to access downtown businesses.

Recent accomplishments include the 2018 Bicycle Master Plan, the ongoing buildout of the community’s multiuse path network, establishment of a bike share program utilized by residents, students, and visitors, and the League of American Bicyclists’ designation of Salem as a bronze-level Bike Friendly Community.

The Committee, comprised of volunteers appointed by the Mayor, meets at 6:30 P.M. the first Wednesday of each month. Members of the public are welcome and encouraged to participate. To apply to serve on the Bicycling Advisory Committee, please submit the application linked here.
