Managing Urban Trees in Salem

In August of 2016, the City of Salem completed a pilot program for a  City-wide public tree inventory. Working with New England Civil  Engineering, the City cataloged the size, species, condition, and additional details of 350 trees along with parts of Bridge Street,   Lafayette Street, Boston Street, and North Street. In 2017, that work was expanded to include an inventory of all trees on all City streets; the total inventory covered all 98 miles of City streets and identified 4,812 street tree locations, 92% of which (4,435) have a street tree. The final report, released in 2018, is below.

“The data we have collected from this inventory will help set the foundation for what we hope will be an on-going tree management and maintenance plan.....Now that we have assessed our existing conditions and inventory, we can better plan for managing our public trees in a thoughtful and strategic manner.
