Mobility Services

One of the primary duties of the Traffic and Parking Department is to help introduce safe and accessible options for people to move around the City in whatever mode of transportation they choose. The City has offered a bike share service for the past 3 years, and is currently determining the future of the system after the vendor ceased operations. In December of 2020, an on-demand rideshare service, the Salem Skipper, was launched.

In addition to City-run programs, the City is served by the MBTA Commuter Rail Newburyport/Rockport Line, MBTA bus service, and seasonal ferry service. The Salem Trolley offers visitors and residents a combination of historical tours and an easy way to get around downtown. The City is also served by multiple taxi operators as well as transportation network companies (TNCs) such as Lyft and Uber.
