Bike Planning and Projects

In 2018, the City of Salem completed the Salem Bicycle Master Plan. Working with Toole Design, the City identified a vision and plan for Salem to become a City that is bikeable for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.

The public process that resulted in the plan included 4 meetings with the 15-member steering committee, listening sessions with 14 stakeholder groups, 2 community bike rides, a public open house, and an interactive online map.

The Bike Master Plan has guided the City’s efforts for bike infrastructure since it was completed. In all instances, the end goal is to move toward a fully connected network of bike accommodations that allows cyclists to travel throughout the City safely and comfortably.

This work supports the City’s Complete Streets Policy adopted by City Council and also serves to calm traffic. Since the plan was completed, the City has installed 7290 feet of bike lane, 6900 feet of protected bike lanes, and 4500 feet of multi-use paths (with 3600 more feet under construction).

The Traffic and Parking Department works closely with our colleagues in Planning and Community Development as well as Engineering and Public Services to implement these bike projects.
