Smart Signals

The City of Salem began installing smart signal technology at major intersections in 2018. Previously, the traffic signals at these intersections were standalone systems. Some of those systems had phases that could be tripped by sensors in the ground, while others were just on timers, but none of the intersections were coordinated with one another. The new smart signal technology will allow these intersections to be tied together to communicate in real time with one another and regulate traffic in an orderly manner. The goal is to have traffic flow that is safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Phase 1 of the project included the following intersections:

  • Lafayette Street at New Derby and Derby Streets
  • Lafayette Street at Harbor Street
  • Lafayette Street at Washington and Dow Streets
  • Washington Street at Norman and New Derby Streets
  • Washington Street at Canal and Mill Streets
  • Bridge Street at Sgt. James Ayube Memorial Drive
  • Bridge Street at St. Peter Street
  • Bridge Street at Washington Street
  • Bridge Street at MBTA driveway
  • Bridge Street at North Street ramp
  • North Street at Federal Street

Phase 2 includes:

  • Essex Street at North and Summer Streets
  • Essex Street at Hawthorne Boulevard and Washington Square West
  • Derby Street at Hawthorne Boulevard and Congress Street

This project has been managed primarily by the City Electirician, but the Traffic and Parking Department has worked closely to ensure that changes are implemented effectively and improve safety conditions for all roadway users.
