September 11th 20th Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony

City of Salem September 11th Remembrance Ceremony Commemorating 20th Anniversary

On Saturday, September 11, 2021 at 9:30 a.m., the City of Salem will hold a remembrance ceremony commemorating the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. The ceremony will take place outdoors at the Salem Fire Department Headquarters located at 48 Lafayette Street. The public is invited to attend.

The event will include remarks by Mayor Kim Driscoll, State Senator Joan Lovely, and State Representative Paul Tucker. During a Bell Ringing Ceremony, as part of the event, Congressman Seth Moulton will read the names of the twenty-five individuals from the Salem region who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

“The Salem Fire Department has commemorated this tragedy annually and has erected a permanent memorial at the fire station, which includes a piece of the steel beam from the wreckage of the World Trade Center tower,” said Salem Fire Chief Alan Dionne.

“This day is especially poignant for Salem as several of our own firefighters were part of FEMA’s Massachusetts Urban Search and Rescue Task Force deployed to Ground Zero in New York on that tragic day,” said Mayor Driscoll. “Our nation will never forget this devasting act of terrorism and, by commemorating this day every year as have done, we never will.”

Police Chief Lucas Miller will broadcast a radio transmission to our police and fire departments commemorated this tragic day. Chief Miller added, “Please join us at Fire Headquarters to pay tribute to all the victims that lost their lives on September 11, 2001.”

This solemn ceremony will also include members of the Salem Fire and Police Departments, as well as local veterans. The Salem High School United States Marine Corp Jr. ROTC students will post the colors, a wreath will be placed at the memorial, and Taps will be played.
