Sustainability and Resiliency

Mission Statement

This Department oversees all sustainability, energy, and resiliency efforts within the municipal government and the Salem community, either directly managing programs and projects or coordinating with other Departments and local organizations.

• Engage and support Salem residents, businesses, and non-profits to participate in activities that further the goals of Resilient Together and other community goals.
• Align and - in many cases - exceed the Commonwealth of Massachusetts goal of carbon neutrality by 2050

Environmental Sustainability is the responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect global ecosystems to support health and wellbeing, now and in the future. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines it as "meeting today's needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs."

Climate Resilience is the ability to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to hazardous events, trends, or disturbances related to climate. Improving climate resilience involves assessing how climate change will create new - or alter current - climate-related risks, and taking steps to better cope with these risks.
