Important Trash, Recycling, and Yard Waste Updates for November and December 2023

As 2023 is winding down, we are sending important reminders to residents regarding trash, recycling, and yard waste opportunities in November and December.
The next white goods collection will be Friday November 17. To schedule a free pickup, please call Waste management at 800-972-4545 at least two days in advance of the scheduled pickup. One white good can be scheduled for pick-up once a month. White goods include dishwashers, dryers, furnaces, hot water heaters, stoves, washing machines, and trash compactors.
A reminder that bulk items can be scheduled by calling Waste Management or online at www.wm.com/us/en/home/bulk-trash-pickup. The fee for the collection of each bulk item is $20 which is paid directly to Waste Management. Bulk items include furniture, metal cabinets, toilets, bikes, and more. Please note that electronics are not accepted (please read further for the next electronic waste recycling event in December!)
Per new state regulations, as of November 2022, mattresses and box springs can no longer be disposed of as trash and instead must be recycled. The City of Salem has contracted with Tough Stuff Recycling to provide curbside mattress and box spring recycling. Residents are responsible for $20/unit paid directly to Tough Stuff Recycling. To schedule your mattress and/or box spring pickup, please visit https://order.toughstuffrecycling.com or call 978-307-4118. Mattress bags are being supplied by the City. Bags can be picked up at the City Hall Annex Engineering Department, 2nd floor 98 Washington Street or Salem DPS, 5 Jefferson Avenue during open business hours.
The annual Textile Recycling and TerraCycle Recycling Drive will take place at Riley Plaza on Saturday November 18th from 8 AM until 1 PM. SalemRecycles Committee members and volunteers will be collecting clean and dry clothing and household textiles in any condition (reusable or not). This is a drive through event, please follow the signs in the parking lot and volunteers will unload items from your vehicle. There will be a trash and recycling delay for Thursday November 23rd and Friday November 24th due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday’s collection routes will run as normal. Thursday’s route will occur on Friday November 24th and Friday’s route will occur on Saturday November 25th.
The next yard waste collection will be during the week of November 27th through December 1st. Please put out your yard waste by 7 AM on your typical trash & recycling collection day. Yard waste must be in paper bags or barrels. Please do not place yard waste in your trash or recycle totes. The final curbside yard waste pickup of the year will take place the week of December 11th. Please put out your yard waste by 7 AM on your typical trash & recycling collection day.
The final white good collection of 2023 will be Friday December 15th. Please call Waste management at 800-972-4545 to schedule a FREE pickup. White goods include dishwashers, dryers, furnaces, hot water heaters, stoves, washing machines, and trash compactors.
On Saturday December 16th from 8 AM through 12 PM, Salem residents and property owners (with ID or tax bill) can recycle electronic waste at Salem High School, 77 Willson Street. Anything with a plug is accepted at this drive-through event. Please bring cash or a check for items that include a twenty-dollar fee. These items include: T.V.’s, computer monitors, microwaves, large exercise equipment, and appliances that contain Freon. If your item is still in good working condition, please consider donating via one of the local Buy Nothing online pages, or other swap/secondhand avenues.
There will be a delay for trash, recycling, and curbside tree pickup for the week of December 25th. Pickups for this week will be delayed by one day for all residents.
