Salem’s Veterans Squares Now Viewable Online

Name, service dates, and more shared on City’s mapping website.

With Veterans Day being celebrated tomorrow, the City of Salem has added a new layer of information to its online mapping website to share the location of the squares and intersections named in honor of Salem veterans, as well as the history of those servicemen and women for whom those places are named.

To see the locations, visit https://www.mapsonline.net/salemma, click on the “Layers” tab at left, and then check the box for “Veterans Squares.” Details about a particular veteran are viewable by clicking on the “i” button on the right side of the map and then clicking on the square.

“Veterans Day is an opportunity to come together and commemorate the selfless service of all our military veterans,” said Mayor Kim Driscoll. “It is a day to honor those who answered our nation’s call and left behind the comforts of home and hometown, to place their own lives on the line so that we may continue to live in liberty. Salem has sent many sons and daughters to the nation’s cause, and we memorialize them through both our words and actions on these special occasions and through the parks, streets, memorials, and squares that bear their names. Last year we named 85 intersections, squares, and plazas in honor of Salem veterans. This year, I am pleased that we are able to share their stories in a single place. I hope everyone will take a moment to find out more about the brave men and women for whom these places are named.”
