Safe Walks Around Salem

During this challenging time, many Salem residents want to get outside to exercise and get fresh air. To encourage safe physical distancing while doing so, the City recommends that pedestrians use the sidewalk with the street on your right side where possible. You may want to cover your face with a mask, bandana, scarf, or other face covering, and should avoid touching common surfaces to the extent possible, wearing gloves if you are able. NOTE: Effective May 6, 2020, the Commonwealth is requiring masks when in public if you are unable to maintain a physical distance of at least 6' from others: https://www.mass.gov/doc/may-1-2020-masks-and-face-coverings/download.

The City’s Traffic and Parking Department has developed the maps here to help suggest safe pedestrian routes that can be traveled in an hour or less. As you walk, you can help support local businesses by window shopping and ordering online when you find something you like. Consider calling ahead to one of Salem’s restaurants offering take-out, as well.

Please also remember to discard gloves, masks, and similar items in trash receptacles after you have used them. Do not discard them on streets and sidewalks; the City is imposing fines of between $100 and $600 for littering these types of items.
