City of Salem Presents Check to NSCAP for Winter Emergency Heating Assistance for Salem Residents in Need

$5,762 raised in donations and sale of “Snowmageddon” t-shirts last winter

SALEM, MA – Mayor Kim Driscoll today presented a check to North Shore Community Action Programs (NSCAP) for $5,762 to help fund emergency heating assistance for needy Salem residents this coming winter. The funds were raised through the sale of “I Survived Salem Snowmageddon” t-shirts last winter during the record snowfall. The money will be used to augment a household’s fuel assistance benefits: after their normal fuel assistance allotment has been exhausted, the emergency heating assistance funding can be accessed as a final measure to get them through the rest of the winter.

Over 500 shirts were sold and additional donations were also received in support of the effort. Shirts were also given last year to “Snowmaritans” – good Samaritans who shoveled out neighbors or helped others during last year’s difficult winter.

“I am very pleased to be able to present these donations to NSCAP for this important program,” said Mayor Driscoll. “Last year, in the middle of what was an exceptionally challenging winter, several hundred Salem residents generously gave to help ensure their neighbors would not go without heat. On behalf of the City, I would like to thank everyone who purchased a shirt or made a donation to the effort. Thanks to their contributions, even more Salem families will be able to stay warm and safe this coming winter.”

“North Shore Community Action Programs is grateful to Mayor Kim Driscoll and the many Salem residents who are helping our neighbors stay warm during this coming winter. No one wants another Snowmageddon, but these funds will help many people get through the winter,” said Laura MacNeil, NSCAP's executive director.
