Mayor Dominick Pangallo Joins Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Mayors Against Illegal Guns

In an effort to combat senseless gun violence in Salem and across America, Mayor Dominick Pangallo has joined Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a joint program of the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund and Everytown for Gun Safety. Members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns are committed to public safety by keeping illegal guns off their streets and out of their communities. These leaders implement and advocate for life-saving gun safety policies from local programs and municipal ordinances to local, state, and federal legislation. Since its creation in April 2006 by then-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and then-Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Mayors Against Illegal Guns has grown from 15 mayors of major American cities to more than 2,000 current and former mayors.

While their backgrounds may differ, they speak with one voice – united against gun violence for the sake of public safety.

“I'm proud to join the over 2,000 mayors across our nation who comprise Mayors Against Illegal Guns,” said Mayor Pangallo. “Every year we lose one Salem’s worth of Americans to guns - around 43,000 lives lost. No community is immune from gun violence. As long as the proliferation of illegal guns continues unchecked and unregulated, this will continue to be a true crisis. For the sake of our neighborhoods and our children, as a parent and as a Mayor, I am committed to doing my part to address this challenge.”

Together with mayors across the country, Mayor Pangallo will work to advance the following principles:

  • Advance enforcement strategies that ensure public safety for residents in communities disproportionately affected by gun violence.
  • Advocate for gun safety legislation at the local, state, and federal level.
  • Collect data to better understand gun violence in our communities.
  • Advance policies that reduce firearm suicides.
  • Invest in victim services and neighborhood-level violence intervention programs.
  • Implement comprehensive tracing of crime guns.
  • Implement strategies to minimize shootings by police.
  • Use the courts to advance gun safety.
  • Use purchasing power to improve gun safety.
  • Invite other cities to join us in this effort.

Every year, over 43,000 Americans are killed with guns and over 76,000 are shot and wounded as a result of gun assaults, unintentional shootings, attempted gun suicides and shootings by law enforcement, devastating families and communities across the country, with a disproportionate impact on Black and Latino/a/x people.
