Mayor Dominick Pangallo has joined the Massachusetts Municipal Association’s (“MMA”) Policy Committee on Personnel and Labor Relations. The Personnel and Labor Relations Committee works on a wide variety of issues such as collective bargaining, civil service, employee benefits, employment law, health care and insurance, human resources, “OPEB” (Other Post-Employment Benefits), pensions, veterans’ benefits, workplace anti-discrimination, and workplace safety.

For the upcoming year, the focus of the Committee is expected to be on Civil Service reform, municipal workplace recruitment and retention challenges, OPEB, and collective bargaining processes. As part of its work, the Committee will develop next legislative session’s set of legislative recommendations regarding labor relations on behalf of MMA and the cities and towns the association represents.

“I’m proud to join this important policy committee with the MMA and I’m grateful to MMA Executive Director Adam Chapdelaine for the invitation,” said Mayor Pangallo, who had previously served as chair of the Salem Retirement Board. “Cities face enormous challenges and pressures when it comes to our workforce, retirees, and labor relations in general. We want to recruit and retain the best people possible for public service, and ensure our personnel policies further our shared equity goals, as well. I look forward to serving on the committee and offering a local perspective about how the state can continue to strengthen its support for employees and employers alike.”

Local officials from communities across Massachusetts serve on MMA policy committees, which advise the MMA Board of Directors, staff, and members on legislative, regulatory, and public policy issues. The committees draft resolutions for the MMA’s Annual Business Meeting, municipal best practices for the MMA’s Best Practices series, and bills for the MMA’s legislative package. Committee membership is comprised of mayors, select board members, city councillors, city and town managers/administrators, and finance committee members.
